It was eight years ago that I got a strange phone call saying "Turn on the TV" - click. That's all that was said. And for the next 45 minutes we watched in disbelief. We saw images of the unimaginable. Unbelievable things. We saw life pulled into sharp focus. it was a wake up call for all of us to what really matters.
In that moment it seemed as if time stood still. I am sure you remember exactly where you were and who you were with that morning. We woke up that morning with our usual "do way ever it takes", "step on the other guy to get ahead", "crush the competition" attitude. But in those moments as we all watched in terror, our focus got redirected. We found ourselves suddenly having a clear recognition of how most of the things in life that we were chasing so hard after, had no real value at all.
Do you remember, what you were wearing, or what did you have for breakfast, what plans did you have for that night? What movie where you going to see? What expensive new toy were you going to buy? Do you remember any of that? Or did the only thing that crossed your mind was, "I need to call, my mom, my sister, my aunt , my ....." It is in moments like these that we forget the useless, unimportant, trivial, replaceable things of life, and find what matters most comes to the forefront.
Why does it take a tragedy to come to our door, before our hearts come home to the things that really matter. Things like family, relationships and faith. Jesus told us if we will focus our hearts on him, he will give us the things we need, the desires of our hearts. He didn't promise to give us our every want, but what he knows we need. If we would seek Him and his kingdom first, he promised to add to our lives the things that truly make us rich.
Let's focus on the things that really matter....
