"Who told you to drive those tent stakes so deep?"
I'm sure this question was asked over and again as Abraham moved about in his quest to be obedient to follow God's heart. Abraham chose to live in such a way that his desire to follow God, at His lead and His call, and it would cause him to move from place to place on a regular basis. One would think after all that moving about; it would eventually come natural after a while. Pulling up those tent stakes and setting out for another new location should become natural. But for some reason it doesn't, does it? Why is it that we get so settled, so comfortable, when all along God has called us to follow Him? And yet we find our tendency is to get attached to our surroundings. We were created to follow hard and fast after His lead, and yet our nature resists. So we drive our tent stakes deep into the familiar hoping it can be a reason to stay where we are, "It’s too much work, too much effort to pack up and change." And we do this to stay how we are too. We get so settled spiritually as well. We get comfortable with "having this much of God and God having this much of me". We settle for how our spiritual life is right now - when God has called us to be so much more than what we think, see or imagine we could be. Imagine where we would be today, if every time God spoke into our spirit, we said “Yes!” Imagine what our impact on our children, our neighbors and our community would be like if we lived with a constant readiness of heart toward God. It can be ours today. But first, we need to re-align our perspective and change our hearts. We need to re-align our desire for our comfort, to line up with His desires to bless us for our obedience. We need to focus our hearts on chasing after His dreams for us – for our dreams are far too small. When we do this we will find a new freshness will be ours in our spiritual journey with God. And we will be truly surprised by the journey and where it takes us. Our goal - never satisfied where we are in the journey, and yet, always satisfied with Him!
